All You Can Eat... But With 'Trends'

This week we discussed SEO's and opening our iFixit accounts. I wanted to first touch on the instructions that iFixit publishes. The writing and instructions are so easy to follow. Some of the different manuals tend to seem a little more difficult to complete; however, they still remain easy to follow. I think this shows how important it is to communicate in a clear but also concise manner.

I have to be honest, before this class I had no idea that iFixit even existed. It seems like such a great solution to a serious problem. However, I wanted to address the serious problem that we have in our society. We have created a trend where we tend to expect and want new things. This mentality can be applied to anything. For example we can look at something as simple as trends on TikTok, we can focus on fashion trends and the demand for fast fashion, diet trends, workout trends, new iPhones three times a year, and the list goes on and on. As hard as everyone seems to try and stay away from it, I do think that everyone is capable of easily following into these quick produced items.

With all of these expectations for society to constantly consume, I wonder if we should start holding companies responsible for the mass amount of waste that they help produce. We can think of Apple producing multiple iPhones and sometimes not allowing older phones to update. Thus, resulting in the consumption market to go up. We can also think of the clothing company Shein, or even any other fast fashion company that mass produces clothing in order for consumers to constantly stay in trend. Then these fast fashion companies feed into clothings trends always changing.

My overall problem with this is the fact that it is ruining our world. So, without the consistent mass production, couldn't we solve a major global waste problem? Or could there be more companies produced like iFixit in order to help solve the bigger problems?

  1. Hi Ciera, these are really great points. I agree that maybe we should be holding companies responsible for mass producing and encouraging a throw away society. I think we could all do better and try to hold off on buying that new phone or keep our fashion trends a couple years longer. We might even save some money while doing this! Technology seems to be moving so quickly that it is hard to keep up, but maybe it would be good to slow it down a little and go back to a less complicated lifestyle.
